How do 5’UTR features impact translation?

We have made substantial progress on identifying mRNA elements in yeast, however we have only scratched the surface of DARTs ability to uncover novel translational control elements. We will extend these findings into higher eukaryotes in addition to uncovering how these features are regulated. We will do so by expanding DART into other systems, including extracts from human cells, while also exploring the mechanism of translational control in more depth. Overall our goals are to: (1) identify all 5'-UTR elements that affect translation, (2) uncover their mechanisms of action, and (3) determine how inclusion of these elements is regulated.
